William Seward Burroughs II, più noto come William S. Burroughs ([ˈbʌroʊz]; Saint Louis, 5 febbraio 1914 – Lawrence, 2 agosto 1997), è stato uno scrittore, saggista e pittore statunitense, tra i massimi del secondo Novecento.

Ispiratore della Beat generation, ma dalla vastissima influenza anche sui movimenti letterari successivi e finanche nel campo della fantascienza, Apparve inoltre in vari film e collaborò con numerosi musicisti e performer. Tra le molte innovazioni portate da Burroughs all'arte narrativa, spicca in particolare l'invenzione della tecnica del cut-up, con cui scrisse romanzi come Nova express e Il biglietto che esplose. È noto soprattutto per il suo capolavoro Pasto nudo che, al contrario di quanto si pensi, non è stato elaborato tramite la tecnica del cut-up succitata. Si tratta bensì di una selezione di scritti che furono trovati da Ginsberg e Kerouac quando Burroughs fu rintracciato a Tangeri in stato confusionale a causa delle droghe. Nel 1983 fu eletto all' American Academy of Arts and Letters, e nel 1984 ebbe il titolo Commandeur de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Francia. per poi essere festeggiato per i suoi settant' anni al Limelight di New York da tutta la scena artistica e musicale cittadina.

Joan Vollmer (February 4, 1923 – September 6, 1951) was an American woman who was an influential participant in the early Beat Generation circle. While a student at Barnard College, she became the roommate of Edie Parker (later married to Jack Kerouac). Their apartment became a gathering place for the Beats during the 1940s, where Vollmer was often at the center of marathon, all-night discussions. In 1946, she began a relationship with William S. Burroughs, later becoming his common-law wife. In 1951, Burroughs killed Vollmer. He claimed, and shortly thereafter denied, the killing was a drunken attempt at playing William Tell.
